KAREN COTTRELL has been writing since she was in primary school, where she authored school plays and created programs presented at holiday assemblies and parent/teacher evenings. Her interest in story-telling continued through her high school years, and was rewarded by winning first place in Original Oratory in state level competition. She went on to college, and received her BA from Denison University in Philosophy and Creative Writing, before turning to a more “practical” career interest and attending law school in her home state of Ohio.
Unable to resist her passion for writing, she moved from Ohio to New York City in 1981, where she has studied with Aaron Frankel, Kenneth Jacobson and Jeffrey Sweet. For her first work, she co-authored the book and wrote selected lyrics for Manhattan Serenade, based on the music of Louis Alter, and presented by the AMAS Repertory Theatre in New York City.
Within this work, she authored her first two scenarios for ballet – Metropolitan Nocturne and Side Street in Gotham, both choreographed by David Anderson. She is the co-author of Perfect Love!, an operetta based on W.S. Gilbert’s Engaged, originally presented in an Equity Approved Showcase in New York City by The National Arts Club, followed by a staged reading with The New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players. She also wrote a Musical Act, entitled I’m Old Fashioned, with choreography by tap legend Henry LeTang.
In addition to co-authoring the Green Mansions scenario, she has written the scenario for a one act ballet, Os Espíritos De Um Dia Do Verão [The Spirits Of A Summer Day]. She currently is working on a number of adaptations of literary classics for the musical theater.
She is a member of ASCAP and an associate member of the Dramatists Guild.
